  13. This document contains release notes for version 3.0 of
  14. Sierra Software's Track 'n Trend for Windows Version 3.1
  15. (and later). Information in this document is more current
  16. than that in the manuals, or help files.

  18. Track 'n Trend is distributed as shareware. The application
  19. is copyrighted and all rights are owned by Sierra Software.
  20. Please read the license and registration topic in the
  21. help file for more information.

  23. IMPORTANT NOTES:
  24.     o  Track 'n Trend must be installed via SETUP.
  25.     o  Read the ACCESS 2.0 Compatibility section.

  27. Minimum Requirements:
  28.     o  IBM-compatible PC (386 minimum).
  29.     o  Hard disk with 3 megabytes of free space.
  30.     o  Mouse, or other compatible pointing device.
  31.     o  VGA compatible display.
  32.     o  4 megabytes of RAM.
  33.     o  MS-DOS 3.1 or later, MS-Windows 3.1, or later.

  58. Part 1: Software Installation Information
  59. ============================================================

  61. Before installing Track 'n Trend you should make backup
  62. copies of all the distribution diskettes.
  63.  
  64. Also, ensure that the Windows directory, including drive
  65. letter, is in your PATH. If the drive letter is not included
  66. in your PATH statement, Track 'n Trend will be unable to
  67. determine where Windows resides.
  68.  
  69. SETUP.EXE is a Windows application; that is, it is run from
  70. Windows, rather than from the DOS prompt.  SETUP.EXE will
  71. only run in Windows Standard or Enhanced mode. It will not
  72. run in Real mode. You can determine how Windows is configured
  73. on your computer by choosing About from the Help menu in the
  74. Program Manager.
  75.  
  76. If your PC is on a network it may be faster to copy the
  77. diskette files to your hard disk and then install the
  78. application from the hard disk.
  79.  
  80. To install Track 'n Trend, use Program Manager or File
  81. Manager to start SETUP.EXE as you would any other Windows
  82. application. For example, if you are installing from drive
  83. A:
  84.  
  85.   1. From the Program Manager File menu, choose Run.
  86.  
  87.   2. In the Run dialog box, type A:SETUP and choose OK.
  88.  
  89. Some of the files on these disks may be compressed and must
  90. be expanded before they can be used. For Track 'n Trend to
  91. work properly, you must install the files using SETUP.EXE.
  92. You cannot simply copy the files to your hard disk. Later
  93. versions of DLL's and VBX's will not be superseded by the
  94. SETUP on your system.
  95.  
  96. Some problems you may encounter while installing
  97. Track 'n Trend:
  98.  
  99. 1.  If disk space is very low SETUP may terminate without
  100.     any warning.
  101.  
  102. 2.  If other Visual Basic programs are running, the
  103.     DLL's and VBX's may be locked preventing updating.
  104.     Stop other applications before the installation
  105.     process. It may be necessary to restart Windows
  106.     and install Track 'n Trend before running other
  107.     applications.
  108.  
  109. 3.  If you have DLL and VBX files 'copied' into the
  110.     WINDOWS directory in addition to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  111.     directory the installation of Track 'n Trend will
  112.     duplicate these files to ensure that the latest versions
  113.     are available. The correct directory for these files is
  114.     WINDOWS\SYSTEM.
  115.  
  116. 4.  If the SETUP program is terminated (i.e. power failure,
  117.     or diskette read error): one, or more, files being
  118.     loaded might not have been completely copied. These need
  119.     to be deleted before running SETUP again.

  122. Part 2: ACCESS 2.0 Compatibility 
  123. ============================================================
  124. VB 3.0 provides an ACCESS 1.1 programming interface, but not
  125. an ACCESS 2.0 interface. Track 'n Trend has been developed
  126. with VB 3.0 and therefore ACCESS 1.1. Accordingly,
  127. Track 'n Trend includes the ACCESS 1.1 DLL's:
  128. VBDB300.DLL (4/28/93), MSAES110.DLL, and MSAJT110.DLL.

  130. A 'VB 3.0 to ACCESS 2.0 Compatibility' package is available
  131. from Microsoft. This will alter existing VB 3.0 programs
  132. (through new DLL's) so that ACCESS 2.0 is the default
  133. standard. This set of DLL's includes: VBDB300.DLL (for
  134. ACCESS 2.0 dated after 4/28/93), MSAJT200.DLL, and
  135. MSAES200.DLL. These DLL's can coexist with ACCESS 1.1 except
  136. for VBDB300.DLL, which is a replacement. There are
  137. ramifications in using this 'Compatibility' software
  138. however, and each person must decide which direction is best
  139. for them. For this reason we do not 'force' this upgrade
  140. upon you.

  142. If you have decided to use the 'Compatibility' layered
  143. product, Track 'n Trend should perform without any
  144. difficulty. The 'Compatibility' layered software can be
  145. installed before, or after, the installation of
  146. Track 'n Trend. The ACCESS 2.0 version of VBDB300.DLL
  147. will not be superseded by Track 'n Trend's SETUP because
  148. it's a later version. Note that once the 'Compatibility'
  149. software is in place, all new Track 'n Trend databases will
  150. be in ACCESS 2.0 format. This includes 'compacted'
  151. databases.
  152.  
  153. Some applications keep some, or all, DLL's in their
  154. directory. If you have installed another VB application that
  155. may have partially placed the 'Compatibility' software in
  156. your WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory (namely VBDB300.DLL) but left
  157. other DLL's in the application directory, Track 'n Trend (as
  158. well as other VB applications that use ACCESS) will
  159. malfunction with an error message that a DLL cannot be
  160. found.
  161.  
  162. This can be confusing because one cannot easily determine
  163. which VBDB300.DLL is currently being used (in the
  164. WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory). To help eliminate
  165. confusion the Track 'n Trend SETUP program will check the
  166. completeness of the required ACCESS DLL's. If a problem is
  167. detected a message will be displayed informing you to
  168. manually review the DLL's. The easiest corrective action is
  169. to rename, or delete, VBDB300.DLL in the WINDOWS/SYSTEM
  170. directory and rerun the Track 'n Trend SETUP program.
